What is a Message in a Bottle?

Lions Clubs Message in a Bottle is a simple but effective way for people to keep their basic personal and medical details where they can be found in an emergency on a standard form and in a common location – the fridge.

Message in a Bottle (known within Lions as MIAB) helps emergency services personnel to save valuable time in identifying an individual very quickly and knowing if they have any allergies or take special medication.

Paramedics, police, fire-fighters and social services support this Lions life-saving initiative and know to look in the fridge when they see the Message in a Bottle stickers, supplied. The initiative provides peace of mind that prompt and appropriate medical assistance can be provided, and next of kin/emergency contacts can be notified.

How do I use it?

You will need to complete the form that comes inside the bottle, but you may like to ask a carer or relative to help you complete it.

Message In a Bottle

Information required to complete the form:

- Your full name and brief physical description.

- Your Doctors name and surgery address and telephone number.

- Brief description of medical condition - and any medicines that you are currently taking.

- The names, addresses and telephone numbers of two persons who may be contacted in the event of an emergency.

- Details of any pets which also live at the premises, and may need to be taken care of.

In addition, it is recommended to include your repeat prescription list. This information may be of great value to members of the ambulance services. Paramedics are able to administer drugs, but will need to know what you are already taking to eliminate the risk of drug interaction.
